MALE ARMPIT
object, neon, 2021
neon dimensions: 55×45 cm
base dimensions: 60×50 cm
The inspiration for this piece comes from an analysis of the male body in a relaxed position. The abstract shape focuses on the armpit area, the exposure of which is associated with relaxation, openness, but also vulnerability. In the realm of the body, the work touches upon how masculinity is culturally perceived. This aspect is also conveyed through color: male physicality is simplified into a neon line in shades of pink, contrasting with the black armpit hair. The visible hair, on one hand, serves as a symbol of strength, and on the other, becomes an object of disgust. The delicate part of the male body becomes a battleground for contemporary concepts of thinking about the male body and what is considered (un)manly, (un)hygienic, (a)sexual, or (un)accepted.
