BODY IN THE IMAGE OF THE SHADOW
(PL: CIAŁO W OBRAZIE CIENIA)
site-specific installation, 2015
3 neons shown in the 17th century room of the former Dominican Monastery Library, Poznan, PL

The starting point of the installation were the images of the body of Christ taken from the paintings of old masters. Each piece has been created by reducing the image to a clear line reflecting the contour of the body. But at the same time a line is made of light, which dematerializes it. I am interested in the tension between the physical and the metaphysical.
The work refers also to the Greek legend about the origins of the painting, that came from a scene of farewell, in which a girl outlined the shadow of a beloved man, in order to “keep the body in the image of his shadow” (Belting, 2007). For me it is a kind of filling contour with meaning that can refer to the collective memory, religion, visual culture, night life and death.
